Obituary of Frances McCulloch

Frances Rose McCulloch, age 100, died peacefully on January 7, 2018 surrounded by family at Villa Marie, Red Deer.  Frances was born in Acme, Alberta on February 24, 1917, daughter of the late Arthur and Katherine (Kate) Wheeler.

Frances lived the first 86 years of her life in Acme and married Hugh McCulloch in 1939. They were together for 55 until Hugh’s passing in 1994.  They raised their family and ran a joint real estate and insurance business for a number of years.  The business was sold and she continued to work there until her retirement at the age of 67.  Frances was a great supporter of her community and had a long history of volunteer work.  She was very involved in the Anglican Church, the Eastern Star and the Hall Board, as well as being a village councillor for two terms.  She began playing the organ at St. John’s Anglican Church at the age of 14 and continued as the organist there until, at age 86, she moved to Victoria Park in Red Deer where she also played for church services. Frances was an extraordinary cook, baker, homemaker, dancer, bridge player who loved to entertain her friends and family. The family home in Acme was the touchstone for large and loving family.

Frances is survived by five of her six children and their spouses; Vincent (Marny) McCulloch, Randy (Carole) McCulloch, Michael (Charlotte) McCulloch, Rose McCulloch, Candace Spurrell (Gary) and Jill Pedersen (Ken); 14 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband Hugh, she was preceded in death by her son, Miles,  great grandson Riley and  four siblings (George Wheeler, Markham Wheeler, Doreen Van Lare and Eva Macklam).

The family is grateful to all those at Villa Marie who made her last few years as comfortable as possible.

A Memorial Service will be held at the United Church in Acme, Alberta at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 13, 2017, following the family interment service at the Acme Cemetery. If desired, and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and NWT or the Steven Lewis Foundation Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign (
